Italy’s Pisa is an ideal spot for a mini break or short getaway. A weekend in Pisa can be perfect for couples, groups of friends, or solo adventurers, and it offers something for everyone. You can combine shopping, interesting sights, relaxation, cultural attractions, beautiful open spaces, fine wines, delicious food, and some of the captivating Italian atmosphere and zest for life.

Several budget airlines operate flights between Pisa and other destinations, and there is a wide choice of accommodation options. The city is easy to explore by foot, and there is a good local public transport network. Whether you are visiting as part of a wider Italian, or European, adventure, or simply taking a few days to break from the norm, here are some ideas of what to do with your time on a weekend in Pisa:

Leaning Tower of Pisa

The iconic leaning tower is an absolute must when in the city. Standing in the centre of the Piazza dei Miracoli, it defies all belief. Wonder at the leaning gem, and take the obligatory “pushing the tower over” photographs. Walk to the top. Take time to explore the other architectural delights in the square. It is a great place to soak up some culture and see some terrific old buildings.

Cathedral of Pisa

Near to the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral of Pisa is another stunning masterpiece. The marble exterior is complimented by interesting statues and grand columns.

Monumental Cemetery

There are ancient Roman burial sarcophaguses inside the cemetery, as well as highly decorative and ornate frescoes. You cannot help but be impressed by the level of details; Known as the Master of the Triumph of Death, the scenes are quite graphic.

Santa Maria della Spina Church

Although small, the Santa Maria della Spina church is really very pretty. It is a visual treat from the outside, and the inside is equally as lovely.

Fortezza Vecchia

The views from the top are simply breathtaking. You can admire Pisa at your feet, and take some excellent cityscape photos.

Drink Local Wine!

Italy is famous for its vineyards and wine production, and no visit to the country is complete without sampling some of the delicious varieties. Spend some time relaxing with a good glass of Italian wine in one of Pisa’s small but chic bars. This is a great way to relax in the evening, and watch the world go by.

Whatever you decide to do with your time, a weekend in Pisa is sure to create long lasting and pleasant memories.
