Things to do in Yokohama

Located on the western coast of Tokyo Bay, directly to the south of Tokyo, Yokohama is Japan’s second-biggest city. Part of Kanagawa Prefecture, you’ll find many major sights in Yokohama. Full of character and fun, take a stroll through Yokohama and enjoy the excellent food, shopping, and views of the sea.

Ascend Landmark Tower

A trip up the striking Landmark Tower is one of Yokohama’s highlights. Standing at an impressive 296 metres high, the equivalent of 70 towering floors, the Landmark Tower boasts one of the fastest elevators in the world! Ascend at 45 km/h and visit the Sky Garden observation deck on the 69th floor for a wonderful panoramic view of Yokohama and beyond. On a clear day you can see as far as the iconic Mount Fuji. Look out also for Yokohama Bay Bridge.

Visit Yokohama Chinatown

Yokohama Chinatown is one of the most popular areas within the city. Teeming with Chinese residents, native Japanese, and foreign tourists, it’s often said to be one of the biggest Chinatowns in the world. There are about 300 Chinese shops and restaurants in the area; that’s certainly a lot of shopping and eating to be had! The area also has several beautiful and fascinating Chinese temples and gates where you can soak up the Chinese culture and spirituality, and at night time the area is awash in the dazzling glow of bright flashing neon lights.

Enjoy Sankeien Garden

Opened in 1906, the expansive Sankeien Garden is a lovely place for a stroll. Home to many traditional Japanese buildings, several are national heritage sites. You can see different architectural styles from all around the country within the large leafy park, and take a walk through the enchanting landscaped gardens. There are well-maintained walking paths that lead past shimmering ponds, a number of beautiful ceremonial tea houses, and a stunning 500-year-old pagoda.

Get Sporty at Bay Stars Stadium

This is probably one of the most fun places to watch an active and exciting baseball game in all of Japan. The Bay Stars Stadium sits on the site of the previous Cricket Ballpark. Watching a game here is likely to be something that you won’t forget!

Be Amused at the Ramen Museum

A rather quirky and unusual attraction, don’t miss the Shinyokohama Ramen Museum when in Yokohama. Dedicated to the popular noodle dish of ramen, it’s certainly a top place for foodies! Explore the museum and learn more about the invention of the now-ubiquitous cup noodle, see the various forms of packaging throughout history, discover how the noodles were first created, and read famous quotes about the noodles. Sit for a while in one of the eight fabulous onsite ramen restaurants, each representing a different part of the country, and slurp on a bowl of the tasty noodles that are so well-loved in Japan.
