Officially known as Santiago de León de Caracas, Caracas is the capital and largest city in the South American nation of Venezuela. Although it is not a typical tourist hub, there are still several great things to do in Caracas. There are diverse attractions and activities to suit many different tastes and interests.

A sprawling city, Caracas boasts an eclectic mix of historical artefacts and modern jewels. There are places to enjoy great views, a good selection of places to eat, drink, sleep, and shop, and there is definitely no need to ever feel bored in Caracas!

Soak up Glorious Views

Caracas has a number of places where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views and get some amazing photographs of the vistas. The Waraira Repano Cable Car is a particularly popular activity, carrying visitors high up to the summit of Avila Mountain. Feast your eyes on views that encompass mountains, the city, forests, and the coast, and see what wildlife you can spot in the area. The surrounding national park offers some excellent walking trails where you can really feel connected and at one with nature.

Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Visit the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), and enjoy its immense collection of striking gems, and other elements of art. The university is the oldest in the country, and is also one of the oldest places of higher education in the whole of the Western Hemisphere. With a history that stretches back to the 1600s, there are many beautiful buildings spread around the campus.

Visit Simon Bolivar’s Birthplace

Born in Caracas, Simon Bolivar was a political and military leader. He was an important figure in South American history, a man widely revered and celebrated in nearby countries as well as his native Venezuela. Simon Bolivar was a significant force in obtaining independence for many South American countries, ending Spanish colonial rule. Independent countries included Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Ecuador.

You can visit the place where this once mighty man was born – Casa Natal del Libertador Simon Bolivar. Built in the 17th century, it is one of just a few colonial era homes that remain in the city. A major tourist site, it is an opulent building, with marble floors, a sweeping patio, elegant rooms with original furnishings, and exquisite Venezuelan art.

Watch a Baseball Match

When it comes to sport, baseball is a really popular activity in Caracas. The professional league runs from October through to January, and it is well-worth catching a game to feel the energy and buzz. It’s a great way to experience a little of the local life.

Munch on Delicious Arepas

Caracas has a speciality breakfast called Arepa, made from flat cornmeal patty. A great way to start the day, you can dine like a local and enjoy some of the traditional fare when travelling. Other popular dishes to sample include Reina Pepiada and Peluda.

Admire Salsa

Whilst there are various popular dances in Caracas, the energetic and enthralling salsa is a particular favourite. Spend a fun-filled evening at a captivating salsa show, and, if the vibe grips you, you could also join weekend classes and learn the beautiful steps yourself!
