San Francisco is a beautiful city you should definitely visit, even when no one will come with you. It has a hilly landscape, fog, colourful houses and cute cable cars. Just be a tourist and take one of the cable cars through the city. But there are a lot of other things to do when you’re travelling alone. This city has a little bit of everything!
Take a stroll through Fisherman’s Wharf
Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular neighbourhood, especially Pier 39. Many tourists visit Pier 39 because it is a shopping centre filled with – well – shops. You will find restaurants, street performers and other attractions. For example the Aquarium of the Bay, 7D experience and of course one of the main attractions, sea lions! They just lay on the docks, which makes for quite an amusing view.
Visit the Golden Gate Bridge
When you think of San Francisco, you’ll probably think of the famous bridge. Once called ‘The bridge that couldn’t be built’, today named as one of the seven modern wonders of the world. So when you visit the city, you can’t miss this famous construction. Take a walk on the sidewalks during the day and check out the view over the city. Or take a bike! The Golden Gate Bridge can be found at the opening of the San Francisco Bay. Keep in mind that there might be construction work, so public transportation is a good way to go!
Go for a hike
You can go hiking over the Marin Headlands and explore the city. This offers a spectacular view and you won’t feel alone thanks to the many runners and walkers (for The Walking Dead fans, we are talking about people walking). In San Francisco you can also find many parks where you can enjoy a nice little walk. Do you prefer a less crowded area? Go to Mount Sutro and walk in the middle of Cole Valley where it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere.
Solo Travel Tip: When you are travelling alone, it could be wise to make sure you always take a (cheap) prepaid phone abroad with you to keep in touch with loved ones. You can easily top up your prepaid credit online at Recharge.com.
Grab a bite to eat
Sounds logical, doesn’t it? But getting food in San Francisco can be an attraction on itself. You’ll find more than 4500 different restaurants in the city, including some of America’s best. Last year Michelin awarded stars to 40(!) restaurants in the city. It’s safe to say there are many culinary hotspots. But you’ll also find many restaurants to eat a burger, pizza or cheesecake. There’s no excuse for eating poorly when you’re in San Francisco.
Get on a ferry and go to Alcatraz
Have you ever wanted to visit the most highly secured prison in the world? When you’re in San Francisco you can. The high-security federal prison ‘Alcatraz’ is situated on Alcatraz Island, a little off the coast of San Francisco. Take a ferry to the island and take one of the tours to get to know more about the prison and its convicts, such as the infamous Al Capone.
